Quarantine - Pt 1. - How much to Drink
This will be the first part in a series about our current collective life, during this unprecedented time in recent history. Also, to clear any expectations, these writings will not give any medical advice, tips on how to find toilet paper, or be really that helpful at all. However, we find that this is a good time to help bring people together for a little light hearted entertainment, when everything else seems to be going to crap around us. On that note, this first part will focus on a frequent question we’ve been getting, which is - How much should I be drinking during this pandemic/quarantine/stay-at-home time? (Also, please do stay at home if you’re not essential workers, and thank you to those who are working for the rest of us)
Well, the first and easiest answer if I wanted to stop writing would be as much as you want, because why the hell not? However, I take my journalistic integrity seriously, and won’t just respond with that glib of an answer. So let’s try and tackle this a few different ways.
First, are you still going to work? If you are still going to work (healthcare, grocery, first responder, shipping, trucking, janitorial, etc) then I wouldn’t recommend changing your regular drinking habits, as we want to make sure you’re still able to head to work for your essential jobs. I will recommend that maybe you treat yourself to a little bit nicer cocktail, or pour of your favorite drink to reward yourself. Also, feel free to ask people you know that may be working from home to send you some booze care packages, since you may not have as much free time to go out yourself.
Second, are you now working from home most/all of the time? (Also, please start wearing pants if this is you) This becomes a different environment, especially if you have not worked from home regularly before, so you may lose track of days and what time it is. This makes it very easy to start drinking at 8am (thank you bloody mary’s), but remember, you do still have to get work done, and probably have calls/video chats for work. So you need to make sure to be somewhat sober at least. But figure out what works for you and start incorporating a cocktail hour around 4, before you start cooking dinner. And then try and stop drinking long enough to cook, and then a couple more before bed, because again what day is it?
Third, are you off work completely? Then none of the above rules apply, and you do what needs to be done to get through the day, and hopefully you’ll be back working soon. Want to start the day with some drinks and video games, go ahead. Just make sure to exercise every once in a while to stay sane. Also, watch out for those barrel proofs, they'll sneak up on you.
The last category that I’ll put will be for those of you with kids, especially kids that used to be at school/college/daycare/etc. I may be incorrect, but from my perspective you probably fall into most of the third category, do what you need to do to keep yourself (and your family) safe and sane during this time. Maybe even have your kids cook dinner some so you can stretch out your cocktail hour, who knows.
We hope that everyone stays safe, sane, and healthy during this time. And if you can do something nice for someone else, especially now, please do. Like giving blood, that’s a great thing you could do now, or help out with local volunteer groups who may need assistance with food for families during this time.
Take care,
Philip
